What is plaque?

Plaque is a thin film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and reacts with food, turning sugar into acid which is harmful to the enamel on your teeth. Prolonged attacks of plaque can destroy tooth enamel and cause cavities and general tooth decay.


What is gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by tartar, hardened plaque that forms near the gum line which can cause inflammation and irritation. The gums recede away from the teeth opening up gaps that become infected. If not treated this can result in the bone supporting the teeth to decay and teeth may be lost.


I have bleeding gums

Bleeding gums may not necessarily mean a problem. It is quite common for gums to bleed after the first week of flossing. Many people brush too hard when cleaning their teeth. If bleeding persists you should make an appointment with your dentists for an examination.


How can I keep my teeth & gums healthy?

A regular teeth cleaning routine will remove plaque from your teeth. A good healthy diet and regular checkups with your dentist will prevent most dental problems. Although most people have a good brushing routine, flossing is also vital to ensure that plaque does not form between the teeth.

Why is a visit to the dentist important?

Prevention is better than cure, regular visits to the dentist will ensure that you are less likely to suffer from dental problems that may develop into a long term problem.

I'm terrified of the dentist?

Relax. Gone are the days when a trip to the dentist meant you would feel the effects weeks after. Many people fear the dentist but so much can be done these days to help you. Remember, good oral health is part of your overall health and fitness, it is essential that you visit the dentists regularly.


What can be done to help?

Many dentists now practice a number of relaxation techniques as either an alternative or to complement sedative medication.


I haven't been to the dentist for a while; will I need a lot of treatment?

Probably not. With a good brushing and flossing routine you probably will not need anything major to be done. Gone are the days when a trip to the dentist resulted in a filling or tooth extraction. Today's modern fluoride toothpastes have drastically reduced the levels of tooth decay that we once had.


How shall I make that first appointment?

It may be an idea to visit the surgery before making your appointment to familiarise yourself with the surroundings and smells to gain confidence. Look around, do other people in the waiting room look as nervous as you or are they cheerful and happy. Tell your dentist that you are nervous and that you need to be looked after. They will take special care of you and help you gain confidence.
